Hey! I’m Ophelia Gates (she/they). I am singer, actor, dancer, and songwriter based in NYC. Originally from Northern Virginia, I inherited my love for music from my parents, sitting in on my Dad’s band rehearsals and doing car karaoke with my Mom. It wasn’t until Middle School where I discovered Musical Theater, a place for me to tell stories with more than just music. I am currently studying Musical Theater at Molloy/CAP21. In my free time I like to draw, learn new instruments, and dog watch at the park.
As the next generation moves forward, I am deeply empowered to present art that makes all people, no matter their identity, feel seen. As a queer, non-binary actor, there are far too few roles that were written with my identity in mind. I would love to play roles of all sorts of gender identities, as it is not always the cis-women that truly represent the essence of my selfhood. Gender identity and sexuality should exist naturally within stories instead of being the main plot line or “quirk” of a character. I am hoping to see a change in the near future with casting and new developments. We are here to tell stories and share perspective. I hope to spark sincerity and bring people back to their state of childlike wonder, a time before we learned our prejudices and biases.
